I've been a proud iPhone owner for awhile now, switching over from an Android. I never held any affiliation toward any specific brand of phone. If it called, texted and Facebooked, it was good enough for me. But y'all. I LOVE my iPhone. Love it. But I don't love how I can't really customize it. On my old phone, I could put whatever in the world I wanted on my home screens...specific pictures, photo albums, different commands (text Marty, call home, etc.)...it was 100% customizable. I knew that my phone didn't look like a hundred other phones out there. Then I switched to the iPhone, where everything is pretty much standard on every single phone. UNTIL TODAY. Y'all ready for this (cue Jock Jams music)??
To quote my favorite race car (Lighting McQueen)--KACHOW! Omgeez. This makes my little creative heart so, so happy. The original pin that I found was written kind of confusingly and it took me awhile to wade through all the information and what I thought the blogger was trying to say. So, I'm going to tempt to explain it in a MUCH easier way (I hope....) Wanna know how to do it? Good thing I'm a giving person...because I'm gonna share the steps! Ready?? (WARNING: ABOUT TO BE A PICTURE OVERLOAD)
First, go to the App store and download the app "Cocoppa." IT'S FREE. Yeehaw!
When you have the app downloaded and open to the home screen, it should look like this:
I'm 99.9% sure that this was originated somewhere in Asia because a lot of the apps are in an Asian language. But don't let that scare you off. I'm going to walk you through!
First, let's tackle an easy app like Facebook. Make sure that your screen is displaying "Icons." You can check at the top where it reads: "Icons" "Wallpapers" and "Stamps." "Icons" should be in dark pink if selected.
Next, scroll down all the way to the bottom. Don't even bother going through the "search" options they offer....I think lots of things got lost in translation and everything except "Search by colors" is SUPER confusing. I just decided on which app I wanted to search for. So, let's search for "Facebook" icons.
On the next page, you'll see tons of icons pop up. Choose your favorite (and that could take scrolling through several pages to decide on one) and click on it.
Once you've clicked on it, it should take you to a new screen. Click on the banner that says "Set up link."
Next, you'll be setting up the app to go with your new icon. In this case, when we're using an app that was downloaded from the App Store, so hit "App Search."
Now, Facebook is super popular so it pops right up first thing. But you can also search for your app in the search bar too. That takes a little digging. In this case, click on the Facebook icon.
Next screen, you'll put the name of your app in the box and hit "OK."
Next, you'll want to open the link in Safari to be able to add it to your home screen. So, hit "Yes" when the box pops up asking you to go to Safari.
After you hit yes, it will take you to a new Safari page. You'll want to hit the "Share" button at the bottom to be able to add the icon. It looks like a box with an arrow coming out it it. Hit it.
Finally, a box will pop up. Hit the icon that says "Add to Home Screen."
Name that little app whatever your heart desires.....
And voila!! There she is, my friends. Your pretty, new personalized icon for you to enjoy.
FYI. You do have to keep your old icon for you to still have the actual app. So I put all of my old icons together in a folder** (which I aptly named "Unpretties") and put on the last "page" of my home screen so I wouldn't see them. **You can create a folder by holding one app and putting it over another. That creates folders which can hold multiple apps at a time. Example:
Now, this post will be one of several explaining how to make your iPhone prettier by using this app. Use this post to download new icons for any app you've downloaded from the App Store. But, be warned: since Cocoppa is obviously from Asia, a lot of apps aren't available to make "prettier." So just play around and see which apps they offer and which ones you're stuck with.
In my next post, I'll explain how to make icons for some of the items that came pre-downloaded on your phone like your Music, Photos, Safari, Videos and so on.
Happy customizing.....
Disclaimer: I do not own the Cocoppa app. I am simply doing a review of the app and how it works on my personal phone. I am not responsible for the app or how it may work on your phone.
i loved this!! i got bored with how my apps were looking. i wonder if there's a way to add an app that hasn't been "recreated" yet? any ideas?
ReplyDeleteNico
What do you mean by "recreated?"
DeleteLooking forward to the the next post on how to make icons!
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously the coolest thing I've ever seen. THANK YOU! This makes my phone soooo much cooler now. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so great! I've been wanting to do this for years and didn't know it was possible! One question though- how do you change the icons for Safari, mail, iTunes etc?
ReplyDeletehow do you do the camera and photos and music?
ReplyDeleteHi, I've just done my Facebook icon but as the last thing you put was to save the original icon, I appear to have lost mine could you advise how to revert?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure. Wish I could help!! :(
DeleteI love this! But I can't find the Safari icon & other apple default apps. How did you find them? I thank you for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteFor everyone that's asked: I'm doing a post tonight or tomorrow that's going to explain how to do the icons for Safari, Photos, Music and other pre-installed apps. So stay tuned!!
ReplyDeleteHave you created this post yet?
Deletehow can i change the icons for the apps that already come on my phone?? Thanks for the help, my phone looks pretty now! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you so much for sharing! You're awesome!! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to the next tutorial!!!!
ReplyDeleteFun. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait for more.
ReplyDeleteYou Rock! I'm a little on the OCD side so I had already "colour coordinated" my apps. But This, this is so much more fun. Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteMust. Have. Next. Post. PLEASE!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's here!!! http://supermessysupermommy.blogspot.com/2013/04/iphone-customization-part-two.html
ReplyDeleteHow come I can not find this app Cocoppa?
ReplyDeleteI don't know? I just double checked in the app store and it was the first thing that popped up.
ReplyDeleteThe android version seems to be Coco Launcher :)
ReplyDeleteFor droid the screen looks very different do u use the same steps?
Deletewhere did you find your chevron wallpaper?? LOVE IT!!
ReplyDeleteSorry...I posted a new comment instead of replying! It came from Cocoppa too! Select "wallpapers" instead of "icons" on the home screen and browse away! Lots of cute ones on there!
DeleteThe background came from Cocoppa too! Go to the top, where I have Icons selected and hit "Wallpapers." Then save it to your camera roll and make it your background!
ReplyDeleteCan this work for an iPad as well?
ReplyDeleteI just tried it, and YES! It'll show up as an iPhone app when you bring it up on the App Store, but it still lets you download it on there!
DeleteI created a message icon for my email but now every time I click on it it takes me straight to composing an email instead of straight to my inbox...this happening to any one else?
ReplyDeleteKristen
That happened to me too. I was having to exit out of the email to get back to my inbox. Since I was using gmail, I just downloaded the gmail app instead.
DeleteMine did not work right it still has my Facebook app the same and my icon. They are separated from each other what am I supposed to do?
ReplyDeleteIt did work....it'll keep your old icon and also create a new one. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of my post and I explain how I just put all my old icons together in a folder. If you delete the old icon, it deletes the app completely.
Deletecan you do it for the mail, notes, ...safari..etc?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Go to my post right after this one, titled "iPhone customization...part TWO!" and it details how to do those type of apps!
DeleteHow do you do photos?
ReplyDeleteHow do you do photos?

OMG.... i'll be up all night fixing my apps now! :) thanks for a great tutorial!
ReplyDelete…andtheyallfalldown...
these are just short cuts though... I just wanted to change the look of the original icon
ReplyDeletehow do you do the photos icon?
ReplyDeletewhere is your part 2
ReplyDeleteAfter I changed two of my apps it did not allow me to change anymore without registering with Cocoppa. I just wanted to make sure that we needed to register if we want to use more than two of our icons?
ReplyDeleteOk some people have downloaded this and they had to restart there apple product so i deleted it and and all the little icons
ReplyDeletedoes it cost anything to customize it
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! Love this. Great find. I downloaded the Cocopaa app while i still had your instructions still up on the screen. Easy to follow. Already changed three apps in 5 minutes....I'm going to share now with friends and family.....
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Sherry
This made my heart happy! I have been wanting customize my phone for a while now!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else having an issue with the app being a screenshot of the Safari confirmation page? I've tried several times, and I can get all the way to "Add to Homescreen" on Safari step, but instead of the pretty icon showing up on my screen, it's a screenshot of that page. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteHello, after doing 2 of these its asking me to sign up. is this necessary to keep using this app? its seems so. it's want to start a SNS account and going through facebook or other media's. why?
ReplyDeleteI downloaded the app and changed mine to look pretty and kept all my original apps as well. When I clicked one the screen went white and now my phone isn't working and I can't even turn it back on. Did this happen to anyone else?
ReplyDeleteJust to caution everyone make sure you have the original app before you customize the app or else you will end up looking at a white screen until your phone dies. I did a few of my apps and then I couldn't remember if I had the free version or not, I took a guess and looked at a blank white screen until my phone died.
ReplyDeleteJust a couple of answers to a few questions:
ReplyDelete1. I've had it downloaded on my phone for awhile now and haven't experienced any problems. Don't overload it with new icons or it'll go very slowly.
2. It's free, but you do need to register with them to be able to do more than 2 icons.
3. Here's the link for changing the apps like Photo, iTunes, Music, etc.
http://supermessysupermommy.blogspot.com/2013/04/iphone-customization-part-two.html
I didn't have a problem getting icons to download for apps I added to my phone, but I followed the steps for apps that come on your phone and the 2 I've tried haven't worked...I touch the pretty icon and it just takes me to a white screen (but I am able to touch my home button and it goes back to my home screen). Gonna try it again, bc I really want pretty icons for the ones I use the most. Thanks for posting this bc I was wanting to change my icons but I didn't want anyone to "jailbreak" my phone for me to be able to do it!
ReplyDeletehttp://supermessysupermommy.blogspot.com/2013/04/iphone-customization-part-two.html
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find a lot of apps!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if this works for the Ipod 4? Thanks!
ReplyDeletelol, there's a right way to do this, and this isn't it. you're not customizing anything, you're just adding random shortcuts with custom icons. no matter how bad you "customize" the app store icon, the actual app store will still be there, with the same icon it's always had.
ReplyDeleteactual customization would involve going into the app bundle and replacing the icon, or creating a theme with the icons you want and applying it with winterboard.
you may wish to look into jailbreaking, the results on offer are far superior to anything you could hope to accomplish here. just my 2¢

I LOVE THIS! I have a question about getting the new icons for Phone, Messages, & Email. There's the part when adding it that it asks for your phone number or email address. I put in my number for Messages and Phone and now when I open it up it automatically calls my number and has a text open for me to send to myself. It won't allow me to add it without putting my #/email address in…
ReplyDeleteHas anyone dealt with this & know what I need to do to keep it from doing this?
Thanks :)
Well of course, all you're doing is creating shortcuts to call & text yourself. Hope it's a fun conversation!
ReplyDeleteWARNING: a number of my friends used this app and it RUINED their phones!!! (Apple even said this app was the cause).
ReplyDeleteAwesome tutorial. Will this work on my I Pod too? :)
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say thank you for the awesome tutorial! My iphone has never looked better! I just featured you in my blog post, here:

ReplyDeletei found a great icon for music but i cant find the app when it tells you to scroll to find the app your making a shortcut for ;(
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for the tutorial!! But in the New icons the notifications of the messagges do not appear... Could you help me please?? Tks
ReplyDeleteOkay, so, when I hit the link I'll be directed to the safari page version of the app??
ReplyDeletedoes this jail break your phone
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!! I'm your newest follower :) Hope you stop by my blog and follow along too!! Loving this app!
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty cool. KUDOS!
ReplyDeleteCan you still change it to its original theme?
ReplyDeleteDo they have cocoppa for android phones? Cause i cant find it
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering, what did you search to get the safari icon? I cannot seem to find many choices searching 'internet' 'browser' or 'safari'
ReplyDeleteWhen I get notifications they only appear in the original app. How do you get the new looking app cover to receive the notifications?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI am also wondering what you searched for to find the safari icon? Can't find anything cute!
ReplyDeleteI think I've found out why people's phones have gone to a white screen. When you open the cocoppa shortcut icon it brings up both the shortcut and the app. Then both of those go down into the double click bar at the bottom. If you don't clear those often, it gets backed up and screws up the phone. that's just my theory. my friend has had troubles when he doesn't clear that bottom bar of clutter.
ReplyDeleteexample in the link below:

Great instructions!! Thanks a lot!!
ReplyDeleteEach time i enter the message "SMS:" it populates my actual telephone number into the box. I have a 4s. Anyone else having an issue with this and know a workaround?
ReplyDeleteI got super excited when I recognized that Pinterest substitute app you used! Glad to see my designs getting some love and being put to use.

Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing. I like it. telekupon
ReplyDeleteI am going to ask a really silly question. I love the look of these but are you saying that you put your old ones in a folder but still have to go to them for everything? The ones from this app are just to look at and still have to go to wherever you put the old ones? Sorry, confused!
ReplyDeleteLike iOS 5 but during migration to MobileMe and iCloud my contacts aren't talking with the messaging app, so every text I get just shows the phone number. I've tried just about every scenario and have finally come to the conclusion that there is an invisible concact group that can only be accessed by creating a new contact from the texting app and then searching it in iPhone search.
ReplyDeleteLove this - thanks for sharing. I've mentioned you on my blog this morning and put a link to your tutorial :-)
